An Inside Look At DJ Prices

I'm going to break an advertising rule on this page. I'm going to try to inform you of how DJs look at their prices and how we justify our prices to clients. There are two main perspectives on DJ prices. One is the client perspective and the other is the DJs perspective.

From the DJs perspective, we have costs associated with our business. We have costs associated with equipment maintenance, new music, advertising,  insurance and general office stuff like paper, pens and notebooks. The DJs with the better equipment, newest music and greatest advertising have to charge more than DJs with crappy equipment, old or pirated music and lower quality advertising. Some DJs will even charge extra for dance floor lighting, party favors, extra speakers and other things that they wouldn't normally bring with them to events.

DJs also have individual ideas about what their time and talent are worth. DJs who are only charging for their equipment are essentially telling you that their time and talent are worth nothing. However, some DJs invest in educational materials, training workshops, conventions and specialized performance evaluations. These DJs will tend to charge more for their services because they are confident that they can deliver better service than the DJs that don't invest in getting better at our craft.

Those two things set a minimum price for which a DJ would be willing to work. We also have a limited time to provide our services to clients. Some DJs are very, very popular with clients and other vendors and turn down several potential clients for each client for whom we provide service. DJs in very high demand will usually raise their prices. It's not because we are greedy (well, some of us are greedy). It is because we want to serve the clients who place the highest value on our services.

Some people see $500 for a DJ and scoff saying , "No DJ is worth $500" and end up hiring a bottomfeeder. A bottomfeeder is a DJ who buys the cheapest 'professional' equipment, doesn't try to improve their services, and provides a very low quality of service to their clients. People hire bottomfeeders because bottomfeeders are cheap. Other people think of $1000 as the minimum amount that a decent professional DJ will charge.

One of the most frustrating things about searching for a DJ is their unwillingness to disclose prices over the internet or on the phone. One reason is that many clients will see a price tag even as low as $500 and run. If a DJ is good at communicating their value then they are usually make more money by leaving prices off of their website and discussing them in person with the clients willing to meet with them. There is another advantage to them leaving prices off of their websites. It allows them to charge different clients different rates. I know of DJs who will work for $1500 one night and $500 another night depending on seasonal demand, time and day of the week, type of event, or the clients choice of venue.
